Spring weather may not be here yet (it’s still raining every day here in the PNW…) but my passion for making the outside areas of our property beautiful is in full force, so I am excited to share a few of my favorite ideas for our deck update with you!! The last few weekends we’ve spent a lot of time outside (rain or shine) getting the exterior of our home refreshed and ready to enjoy for the summer. While the front yard is nearly complete (minus a few simple DIY projects I’m hoping to share with you soon) the back yard is begging for some attention… Our home sits on half an acre and backs up to farmland, so we end up spending a lot of our time outside during the warmer months. When we bought the house last April we didn’t feel the need to update any of the exterior areas because we were busy updating the interior, but there are some neat changes coming to the outside this year and I’m really looking forward it! We are planning to update and makeover our back deck and pergola as soon as the weather permits, so I’ve spent a bit of time lately on Pinterest looking through ideas. Our plan is to reuse and refresh most of what is already there to keep costs down.
Here is what our deck looks like as of today:
Please excuse the kids toys and sports equipment… Haha. 🙂 Our update plans include extending the right corner of the deck to make it a full rectangle, repairing and repainting the deck floor, removing the clear covers from the pergola and painting it white, and adding some toy/equipment storage (maybe in the form of a bench?).
With that in mind, here are 10 deck updating ideas I’m hoping to incorporate into our backyard deck makeover in the next few months. They can easily be used individually to add just a bit of refreshing to an outdoor area, so if you like just one of them, give it a try! Don’t feel like you have to be crazy like me and update it all… 😉
1. Paint your pergola.
I love the bright look of white, but grey and black tend to be common too. Don’t have a pergola? Consider adding one!
2. Paint the deck floor a fun color or pattern.
You could paint the entire deck, or a popular option is to paint just a specific area to look like it has an area rug!
3. Add trellises to the deck corners.
These simple grid trellises define the deck making it feel like an outdoor room!
4. Build a bench seat along privacy panels.
Don’t forget to add pillows and throws to the bench! 🙂
5. Install a retractable cover.
There are some great DIY versions of these that would be really affordable and fully customizable!
6. Hang curtains.
These can be great for privacy, in addition to adding a soft, cozy feel to the space.
7. Plant flowering vines.
Not only do these provide a beautiful natural element to the space, but they can also provide shade!
8. Hang clear lights.
The warmth of these lights really adds some style to the space, especially at dusk.
9. Add hanging baskets of flowers.
You can’t go wrong with flowers…
10. Hang lanterns.
They don’t have to be anything expensive or fancy – even just round paper lanterns add some fun to the space!
I’ll keep you posted as we work our way through this project – I seriously can’t wait to get started… Oh, and we’re doing my parent’s bathroom makeover next weekend so be ready for some awesome posts about that project!! Thanks again for reading! Let me know if you have any questions.
