I am so excited to give you a tour of our modern farmhouse master bedroom! It is a small and simple room, but I seriously love it to pieces…
One thing I struggled with at our previous house was the fact that we never really invested time or energy into making our master bedroom feel like home. I mean, it wasn’t BAD, it was just a bunch of random hand-me-down furniture and decor that no longer had a place in the main part of the house. So when we bought this new house, I knew that making the master bedroom a special place was extremely important to me! I wanted to create a cozy and inviting atmosphere that displayed my unique taste and style.
Here’s how the room looked when we moved in:
Yes, we were sleeping with our mattress on the floor… We knew that we were going to at least paint, trim out the floors/doors/windows and install crown molding in this room so we didn’t set up our furniture right away. That’s what I call, “tolerating the incomplete because you see the potential” stage… 😉
We didn’t have a large budget for this room, so we ended up repurposing or DIY’ing almost everything in here. Here’s the shiplap wall before we painted:
Honestly guys, this room makes me so happy!!
I love that walking in here immediately calms my soul.
I love that we have family snuggles in this bed almost every morning.
I love that it’s the room I share with my handsome husband.
Welcome to my retreat…
This antique dresser was a gift from my grandmother. I love the buttery cream color against all the white in the room.
Most of this room was actually designed around the natural linen duvet and metal lamps from IKEA.
I love space you gain on the nightstands when the lamps are mounted on the wall!
The headboard and sunburst mirror were both DIY projects and I got the vintage photos from a garage sale. They were originally in black frames so I spray painted the frames white to make them more neutral. I also painted the small mirrors above the night stands a dark olive green to add some dimension.
The sheer white curtains give it a romantic feel.
This small gold table was also a garage sale find – I chose to paint it gold to match the decor in our previous home but I love that it fits so perfectly into this room now too.
One of my best design tips for people that aren’t happy with their decor is to “shop your own house.” Most of the time you own a piece of furniture or decor that would be perfect for whatever you’re decorating, it’s just hiding in a different room of your house. 🙂
Do you see that ceiling fan?! I LOVE IT! It’s one of my favorite things about this room. You can see from the “before” pictures above what it looked like when we moved in… We knew we wanted a fan in our room so I took it upon myself to give it a makeover! We added the medallion to give it more of a regal feel, spray painted the main mechanism and the metal portion of the fan blades black, and swapped out the glass bulb covers for cages and edison bulbs. Fun, right? 🙂
This large mirror actually used to be a closet door in my daughter’s room! I’ve recently been drawn to the full length mirrors leaning against the wall rather than hung…
I got this “happily ever after” pillow at Disneyland – the other side says “once upon a time” in reverse colors. I tend to buy souvenirs I can decorate with!
Don’t you want to just snuggle up in there?! So. Cozy.
And there you have it – our romantic, casual, neutral, modern, farmhouse bedroom.
What do you think? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
